The "Sour Sisters" A/FD
(1961-1964) of Safford-Gaide-Ratican dragster was very successful during its competitive years and one of a handful of Oldsmobile powered fuelers ever. It had a 135" Rod Peppmuller chassis, the engine was a 400" Olds running on 70%, that in its heyday, saw runs as good as 7.88-197.64. It also took home honors at an AHRA National event (Fresno ’64), captured three top eliminators over New Years weekend 1964 (Ramona, Pomona & Fontana) and won the Last Drag Race before San Gabriel closed its gates in the mid-‘60’s. It may have been dubbed the "Sour Sisters", but to the legions of Olds fans, its motor was nothing but "sweet" music to their ears.
With participation in the original NHRA Hot Rod Reunion's CACKLEFEST in Bakersfield Kenny Safford started on and had the "Sour Sister's" Olds recreated in time for the 2000 event. With only a couple of exceptions the car has participated in every Reunion since. It has a 135" Rod Peppmuller chassis (the original chassis builder) with a Steve Scott formed and Rod Alexander painted body. The replicated Tony Nancy tuck and roll seat and painstakingly assembled controls are a step back in time when you slide into the high back tub. As for the sweet sounding Olds, Safford built another fuel burning Olds. It is an exact copy of the original.
While the 1961 version of the sucessful Olds powerplant was squeezed for every HP it would offer, the car, as it sits in the NHRA Museum, is very reliable. It starts with either the blower mounted starter or push truck and burns 5 gallons of 75% Nitro with gloriously bright header flames. Although not homologated for competition it cackles and is capiable of 1960's style tire smoking memories. Having the motor gone through in the past 4 years and a new blower ( sorry Dad ) after the 50th Winternationals the "Sour Sisters dragster deserves to be shown and run for those who remember the glorious days of drag racing.
